The first team for the World Gymnastics Championships 2015 has officially been announced!
Off the back of a successful run at the P&G Gymnastics Championships, Team USA have confirmed their men’s World Championship team for Glasgow.
Leading the way will be 2015 U.S. Men’s All-Around gold and silver medallists Sam Mikulak and Donnell Whittenburg who will be hoping to carry over their success from the P&G Championships to the SSE Hydro in Glasgow. They will be joined by Danell Leyva, Alex Naddour, Paul Ruggeri, Brandon Wynn, with Chris Brooks and Marvin Kimble named as first and second replacements.
All will be hoping to stake their claim for a prestigious World medal and just as importantly, a top eight finish in the Men’s Team competition, to guarantee their place at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The USA men’s team finished in bronze medal spot in Nanning at the 2014 World Championships and they will be determined to go even better this year.
Unfortunately U.S. gymnast John Orozco, who finished third at the Glasgow World Cup last December, will not be making a return trip to the city in October due to an injury he picked up earlier in the year. We wish him a speedy recovery as he aims to get back on track for Rio.
USA Gymnastics have also announced the fifteen women who have been named in their final training squad for the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships.
Three-time U.S. All-Around champion Simone Biles looks set to top the bill, whilst the other contenders for the World Championships are Alyssa Baumann, Nia Dennis, Madison Desch, Gabrielle Douglas, Brenna Dowell, Rachel Gowey, Amelia Hundley, Bailie Key, Madison Kocian, Ashton Locklear, Maggie Nichols, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and MyKayla Skinner.
The women’s training squad will attend a training camp 12-16 September before final selection takes place 6-9 October at the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Centre in Huntsville, Texas.
